Wigan v Stoke Sat 15:00
With two wins and three draws in their last six Premier League outings, Wigan Athletic will want strengthen their bid for top flight survival when they welcome Stoke City to the DW Stadium on Saturday, as Betfred offer odds against on Roberto Martinez’s side to pick up the three points in their battle against Premiership relegation.
Roberto Martinez will be counting on a number of first team players to return for the match, with Victor Moses, Mohamed Diamé, Hugo Rodallega, David Jones and Mike Pollitt all facing their own personal races for fitness.
The Latics will need all the attacking help they can muster too, as they currently have the worst home attack in the Premier League, scoring a miserable average of 0.80 goals per game when performing at the DW Stadium.
Wigan haven’t won a home fixture in the league since August but a weekend victory over Stoke would undoubtedly lift the hearts of club supporters even further, potentially pushing them into 17th spot, providing other results go in their favour.
The Potters have had a difficult month of March and although they may have tumbled out of the FA Cup at the hands of Liverpool, draws against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City won’t have done any harm to the players’ spirits.
Peter Crouch’s strike against City was one that he’ll surely remember for the rest of his career and despite the fact that Tony Pulis’ side were unable to hold all three points against the Citizens, Stoke will feel capable of going one better on Saturday.
The fixture doesn’t promise great attacking ability, with Stoke not promising much in terms of offensive capabilities either.
Pulis’ team have managed to score an average of just 0.67 goals per game this campaign but their defence is entirely more assured.
With no immediate injury concerns to worry about, Pulis could start with Ricardo Fuller, as the Potters have a full crop of players to choose from this weekend but that doesn’t change the likelihood of fans witnessing what statistics promise to be a dull affair.
Martinez will be hopeful 21yr old forward Victor Moses can recover from a head injury sustained against Liverpool last week, the youngster catching a stray boot from Martin Skrtel, while Hugo Rodallega or midfielder Mohamed Diame could return to the starting line up.
