Despite recent cup results against Liverpool (1-0 in Capital One) and Shakhtar Donestk (1-1 draw away in Champion’s League) United have lost their last two league games and are in currently in the midst of their worst start in 24 years.

Moyes side are currently 12th in the table, just three points above the relegation zones although such is the competiveness in the league the Red Devils are just 5 points off the Champions league spot.

Defender Nemanja Vidic has urged the team to start respond to their poor start by going on a winning run starting with Saturday’s trip to the Stadium of Light.

“I think this is a more important game,” he said. “We need to get a few wins in a row.
“The situation is not that bad compared to the teams who you would think will also be competing for the title, or at least the ones who were the favourites.

“We know we have to improve. We know we have to work hard and stick together on the pitch.”

United welcome Wayne Rooney after the England forward suffered a shin injury in training midweek and missed the draw in the Ukraine. Danny is the man likely to make way despite his goal scoring appearance against Shakhtar.

Nani could feature after he failed to appear midweek following his return from injury while Chris Smalling is set to continue with Rio Ferdinand struggling with a groin injury.

Sunderland will once again have Kevin Ball in the dugout as they continue their search for a new manager.

Despite suffering defeat to Liverpool last time out Sunderland impressed in patches and Ball as well as the players will have taken confidence from the improved performance.

Ball is set to without Steven Fletcher with a shoulder injury, while Phil Bardsley (foot), Wes Brown (Calf) and Andrea Dossena (thigh) all remain sidelined.
