It’s fair to say that Sharapova was one of the biggest names to be affected by the heat in Melbourne last week as she looks for a second title in Melbourne.

After coming through the difficult conditions, the world number three now faces her toughest opponent yet in Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova.

It will be the second seeded opponent that Sharapova has faced at the tournament as she overcame 25th seed Alize Cornet in the third round 6-1 7-6 on Saturday.

Now the weather has called down to the mid 20’s in Melbourne, it marks much more comfortable conditions for Sharapova who struggled for form during the intense heat of the past seven days.

This was much more noticeable in her second round victory against Karin Knapp where she laboured to a 6-3 6-4 10-8 in a marathon encounter on Thursday morning.

On the other side of the court, Domininka Cibulkova will be out to make a name for herself as the Slovakian 20th seed looks to achieve a new personal best down in Melbourne.

Cibulkova has put in some ruthless performances so far at the Australian Open most notably in the last round where she decimated 16th seed Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-1 6-0 in just under an hour to set up the clash.

Indeed, the Slovakian has shown that she can go far in the past at Grand Slams reaching the semi-finals of the French Open in 2009 as well as the last eight at both Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows.

In the past, the two opponents have met 5 times with Sharapova edging the rivalry 3-2 although this is the first time these two players have met on a hard court surface meaning that anything is possible.

There is no doubt that Cibulkova has all the tools to cause an upset but Sharapova will look to her good form in 2014 to help guide her through a tough opponent and safely into the quarter finals.
