Tottenham Hotspurs are ready to enter the race to sign Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.
Despite having Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker on his books Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas wants to add another defender to his ranks especially with former Ajax star Vertonghen a doubt for the start of the new season and concerns over the fitness of Kaboul.
Those fears, coupled with the fact that William Gallas was released by the club in the summer have prompted the Portuguese tactician to bolster his defensive options and he has identified the 18 times capped Romanian International as the man he wants.
A brief spell with Benfica as teenager aside Chiriches has spent his whole career to date in his native Romania helping the now defunct Internaţional reach the top flight of Romanian football before moving to Pandurii Târgu Jiu.
Another brief spell with Pandurii Târgu Jiu saw him then move to Steaua in 2011 and he was part of the side that won the title and super-cup last season. He also impressed in the Europa league scoring 3 goals in 11 games helping his side to the last 16.
He made his debut for the Romanian International team in 2011 and has since emerged as his country’s first choice centre-back making 12 International appearances in the 2012/2013 season.
The 23 year old has also been linked with a move to Serie A sides AC Milan and Roma however according to reports in Romania Spurs have stolen a march on both clubs and have entered talks with the player’s agent over a deal.
The club are not putting all their eggs in one basket however and are also reportedly keen on Liverpool target Tiago Llori.
The Reds have been linked with a move for the London-born Portuguese youth International all summer but have so far failed to strike a deal with Lisbon paving the way for Spurs to nip in and agree a transfer, with the club reportedly ready to meet Sporting Lisbon’s £8 million asking price for the 20 year old.
Spurs have already signed Brazilian midfielder Paulinho and Belgian winger Nacer Chadli this summer but are set to stop there. As well a new defender AVB wants to striker and is believed to be close to landing top target Roberto Soldado in a £26 million deal.
