Tottenham want Roma star to replace Bale

Roma star Erik Lamela is the latest name being linked with a move to Tottenham as the club’s prepares for the departure of Gareth Bale.

Welsh star Bale is edging closer to a move to Real Madrid with the latest reports claiming that 24 year old has advised Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas that he wants to leave London and move to La Liga.

Bale reported for pre-season training at the club’s North London training centre receiving treatment on a muscle injury and it is believed that he also took the time to tell the club’s hierarchy of his desire to leave.

A number of permutations are emerging in recent days with Luka Modric reportedly set to form part of any deal although one thing is certain, the final fee is set to become a world record transfer fee.

While the finer details are being finalised Spurs’ technical director Franco Baldini has begun the unenviable task of finding a replacement for Bale with reports in Italy suggesting that Lamela is top of his list.

According to, Baldini, who is familiar with the player from his time with the Roman club, is keen on the pacy 21 year old and feels his dribbling ability make him the perfect candidate to supplant Bale in Andre Villas-Boas’ plans.

The twice capped forward joined Roma for a reported £12 million from River Plate in 2011 and in his first season in Italy scored 6 goals and recorded 6 assists in 31 games.

Lamela improved further last season managing 15 goals and five assists in 36 games (33 starts) last season helping the club to a runners-up spot in the Italian cup and finishing fifth in the Italian goal scoring charts.

Financial difficulties have made Roma a prime target for European clubs and “I Giallorossi” manager Rudi Garcia is struggling to hold on to his star players with Chelsea believed to be keen on a double deal for Leandro Castan and Daniele De Rossi, Barcelona are favourites to land Miralem Pjanic and Fulham moving in on deal for last season’s top scorer Pablo Osvaldo.

The club have already lost star defender Marquinhos to PSG, and it believed that a Tottenham bid of £35 million would be enough to snap up the talented attacker.

That fee would not pose any problem for Spurs if as expected Bale moves for a world record deal in excess of £80 million.
