The Londoner’s were comfortable winners in the reverse trip in Moldova with Jan Verthogen and Jermaine Defoe scoring in a 2-0 win and with four league points and a place in the quarter-finals of the league cup secured in the three games since they will be confident of the win.

The club have lost just twice in their last 22 home games and with the games coming thick and fast, Thursday clash will be their 6th game in 18 days, Villas-Boas could rotate his squad.

That could mean that Hugo Lloris is forced to settle for a place on the bench.

The French keeper was knocked out and suffered a concussion in the 0-0 draw with Everton on Sunday but managed to stay on the field and play the full game much to the dismay of FIFA’s chief medical officer, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) and international players’ union FIFPro.

The club and Villas-Boas have come in for much criticism since the game however the Portuguese manager believes the club handed the whole affair correctly.

“I stand absolutely by the decision that I took,” Villas-Boas said.

“I stand by the decision the medical department took following the checks they made on the player all according to the book. I stand by the decision that gave us the green light for the player to continue.

“I have nothing else to say regarding the matter. I registered the fact that people have taken this opportunity to find a chance to get themselves publicised, people who have no experience on the pitch whatsoever in these types of situations.

“I register the fact that two people and a medical department that two years ago saved the life of a footballer on the pitch have been completely forgotten, poorly treated, badly respected.

“I’m not going to respond to any more questions on the situation and I’m not going to say anything else on the matter.

“My medical department has made and has followed the Premier League guidelines for this type of situation.

Lloris has since passed a fitness test and trained with the first team and while he is fit to play Villas-Boas has not yet decided whether to continue with his number one or give reserve Brad Friedel a run out.

Defender Danny Rose (toe), midfielder Sandro (hamstring) and left-back Zeki Fryers (groin) are all definitely out while striker Emmanuel Adebayor will not feature.

Up front Defoe looks set to start and the striker will be hoping to add to the four goals he has already scored in this season’s competition while Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Etienne Capoue will all hope to feature.

Sheriff meanwhile have no new injury worries ahead of the game and head Coach Veaceslav Rusnac has revealed his side are travelling to London to make up the numbers.

By now everyone is healthy and ready to take the field,” he said.

“We are not going to London just to have a regular game on the field. We are coming to get points because we want to play in Europa League in spring.”
