Wigan have emerged as surprise front-runners in the race to sign Tottenham attacking midfielder Giovani dos Santos.
Latics boss Martinez is keen to boost his attacking options, with the likelihood of Hugo Rodallega moving to Liverpool growing by the day. The Mexican is surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane, but Harry Redknapp is only willing to sell for the right price, which is apparently around the £6m mark.
The player did his transfer ambitions no harm at all when scoring one and setting up the other two in Spurs’ FA Cup win over Cheltenham on Saturday.
He has his heart set on a move to Spain, with Sevilla his preferred destination, but the club are stalling on the terms that Tottenham require. However, his performance on Saturday has caught the eye of Martinez, who may be able to convince the Mexican to join Wigan as there is a real South American feel to his squad – with the likes of Antolin Alcaraz and Franco Di Santo likely to make it easy for Dos Santos to fit in.
The 22-year-old, who arrived at White Hart Lane from Barcelona in 2008, has never really lived up to his billing at Spurs, and has had to go out on loan to Ipswich, Galatasaray and Racing Santander in order to play first-team football. He is coming to a stage of his career now where he needs regular games and Martinez may be able to provide him that, either on a loan deal or if Wigan chairman Dave Whelen is willing to splash the required £6m.
