Reports from England are suggesting that Spurs have opened talks with Aston Villa over the transfer of Christian Benteke.
The Belgian striker was one of the stars of the season last year scoring 19 Premier League goals to help Villa maintain their Premier League status and according to the Daily Star, Tottenham are ready to offer of £20m for the 22 year old.
The striking position has become a priority for Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas with Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor only managing 16 league goals between them last season.
With Champions League qualification a priority for the season ahead the Portuguese tactician is keen to bolster his forward line and has identified pacey front man Benteke as the man to lead the line.
Benteke only joined Villa last summer in a £8 million deal from Belgian side Racing Gent but enjoyed a stunning season bagging 23 goals in all competitions and a move to London would give Paul Lambert a healthy profit on the player.
However Lambert, who has been busy in the transfer market since the end of the campaign, would hope that he can persuade the striker to stay in the midlands and lead his young side into the top six.
While the former Norwich manager would be reluctant to part with the Belgian International his hand may be forced should Benteke put in a transfer request.
That would appear unlikely though with Benteke stating at the end of the season his happiness with life at Villa Park and that could make life difficult for Tottenham in their pursuit.
Tottenham’s bid to sign Benteke could become even more complicated should Liverpool enter the fray. The Anfield side could be on the lookout for a new striker should Real Madrid follow up their interest in Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan, who became his national team’s top scorer during the 8-0 win over Tahiti at the Confederations Cup, has issued a come and get plea to the Spanish giants but a move won’t materialise unless the reported £40 million release clause is met.
That would give Liverpool needed to match Spurs offer although with European Football on offer at White Hart Lane a move to London might appeal more to Benteke.
