Both sides will head into the game in good form, City smashed five past struggling Fulham at the Etihad to remain 6 points behind leaders Chelsea while United kept their Europa league hopes alive with a 2-0 win away to West Ham.

While Yaya Toure underlined his tag as the best midfielder in England, United forward Wayne Rooney showed the world that he is hitting form as he hit a wonder striker from the half way line at Upton Park.

The goal was the England forwards third in four games and took him to 13 league goals for the season. With Robin Van Persie set for another spell on the sidelines with the knee injury sustained against Olympiakos, Rooney will once again lead the line against City.

It remains to be seen whether manager David Moyes will stick with the 4-4-1-1 formation adopted against the Hammers or whether Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, back after injury, will come into the side.

Patrice Evra is also in line to return after being rested at the weekend while Portuguese winger Nani is also ready to play.

Ryan Giggs come could in for 962nd United appearance following his superb showing in the Champions League while Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans will be assessed before the game.

The contrast in form between this season and last makes for hard reading for United fans. Last season the Red Devils romped home 11 points ahead of their neighbours yet this time round they are languishing 12 points behind third place City, who have two games in hand.

While City are in the hunt for the title, Moyes has revealed that he is focused solely on claiming three points and not concerned with where his cross city rivals are in the table.

“I want to be competing for the title and I’m not, so that for me is a big enough low, never mind thinking about who else wins it. City has its own focus and we have ours.” He said.

“We need to pick up points to try to get to the top end of the league.”

City meanwhile are set to have their inspirational captain Vincent Kompany back after he missed the win over Fulham with one of Martin Demichelis and Joleon Lescott likely to make way.

Sergio Aguero will once miss out while Edin Dzeko will be in the squad after missing the weekend win though illness.
