Red Devils wear black armbands in memory of Neville Neville

Gary and Phil’s father passed away in Sydney on Friday and the Old Trafford side payed tribute during their season opener against Tottenham Hotspurs.

Manchester United wore black armbands today in memory of Gary and Phil’s father Neville Neville who died on Friday. Manchester United twitter page posted:

“We are sad to learn that Neville Neville, father of Gary and Phil, has passed away. Our condolences go out to his family.”

The Neville family released a statement later on Friday which can be read below:

“We would like to thank everyone at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney for the fantastic care and attention that dad received in the last few days and for their support.

“Tracey will remain with England throughout the tournament and we ask that she is allowed to concentrate on her role with the team.”

Number of former Manchester United players also paid their condolences to the Neville family, including Peter Schmeichel and David Beckham.

United won the game 1-0.
