Bulgaria currently has the initiative as they sit in 2nd place on 13 points level with Denmark but with a better goal difference with the Czech and Armenian’s a point behind.

Lyuboslav Penev’s Bulgaria side could have sealed their place on Friday but lost to Armenia away and they face another tricky test on Tuesday when they play the Czech Republic.

The Czech had appeared to be out of the running for the automatic spot after a draw and defeat to Italy, in between a shock home defeat to Armenia however Bulgaria’s and Denmark’s inconsistency has allowed to hang in.

After three qualifying games without a win the Czech Republic got back to winning ways with a 4-1 win away to Malta and with Bulgaria dropping points in two of their last three games they will be confident of getting a result in Sofia.

Denmark meanwhile almost claimed the scalp of Italy in Cophegan on Friday with Alberto Aquilani injury time goal saving a point for the Italians.

The point kept the Danes in contention and with Malta at home they will be confident of adding three more points to their tally. Should the game in Sofia end in draw or indeed a Czech win then Denmark would move into second place with a win of their own.

Armenia meanwhile are still in with a chance of making the play-off, although it would take an unlikely set of circumstances for them to secure the runners up spot as second-placed Bulgaria would have to draw with the Czech Republic while Denmark would have to lose at home to basement side Malta.

Their hopes took a blow on Tuesday when it was revealed that Mario Balotelli is set to return for Italy.

The volatile forward missed the draw with Denmark last weekend through injury but despite Italy already guaranteed their place in Brazil the AC Milan striker is set to take part in Naples where a win or indeed a draw for Italy would see them finish the group unbeaten.

Armenia have won four and lost five of their nine fixtures to date but they kept their slim hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Bulgaria on Friday and Spartak Moscow forward Yura Movsisyan, scorer of 3 goals in qualification, and Borussia Dortmund playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan in their line-up they will cause Italy problems.

When the two sides met in Yerevan in October 2012 Italy ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi and Osvaldo.
