World number one Judd Trump has brushed aside suggestions from seven time champion Stephen Hendry that he still needs multiple world titles to secure true legend status. Trump reached the last eight after a 13-10 victory over Shaun Murphy that featured his historic 100th century of the season, a break of 132 that also triggered a 100000 pound bonus offered by the World Snooker Tour.
Asked about Hendry’s remarks following the session, Trump smiled “Stephen has set the bar incredibly high. I respect that, but I measure myself against my own targets. If I keep winning trophies and entertaining people, the numbers will take care of themselves.”
The Bristolian emphasised that he does not feel burdened by legacy talk during the tournament, explaining that the milestone century “freed” him rather than added weight.
Analysts note that Trump’s break building has been relentless this term he is only three tons shy of Neil Robertson’s all time record of 103 centuries in a single campaign. Hendry, working as a television analyst, later clarified his stance, praising Trump’s “phenomenal scoring power” and admitting that the 35 year old is “the man to beat” this fortnight.
For his part, Trump insists his focus is on immediate opponents, beginning with quarter final rival Luca Brecel. Legacy, he hinted, is best discussed “in ten years with a coffee, not during a match.”
